Appearance: Zexion is pale-skinned, a little on the short side, and slight of build; it’s safe to say he doesn’t cut the most imposing of figures, even on the best of days. He has blue eyes and short, silver hair with long bangs that cover the right side of his face. He wears a pair of black pants, boots, and gloves as well as a hooded black cloak that nearly brushes the ground and zips up from the bottom.
Personality: Zexion is a master manipulator, opting to work behind the scenes rather than jump into combat. He is more of a strategist than a fighter. He dislikes dirtying his own hands and relies on his wits to get rid of any opposition. As a compliment to this, Zexion is tirelessly patient, being quite content to wait and see how events unfold. He can’t quite be considered the quietest or most withdrawn of the group, but he generally keeps to himself, preferring to be alone rather than with other people. He often comes off as cold and occasionally condescending towards others. He is also quite loyal to the Organization, calling its decline “deplorable”, and takes his missions seriously.
Abilities: Zexion, first and foremost, is a strategist; he would much rather use his wits to fight off opposition than resort to battle and does so unless absolutely forced to use other methods. However, while Zexion is definitely more of a strategist than a fighter, he can certainly hold his own if forced into a fight. He wields the power of illusions and a Lexicon (large book, more precisely a dictionary). With his illusions, Zexion can disguise himself, vanish, duplicate himself, copy certain enemy attacks, and even change the way his surroundings look. His Lexicon works in a somewhat different way; Zexion can trap his opponents in its pages, taking them to a sort of pocket dimension in which he can unleash a variety of bizarre attacks on them, including exploding books. Like the other members of Organization XIII, Zexion has control over lesser Nobodies and create portals of darkness that allow him to move instantly from place to place. In a more physical nature, Zexion is able to identify people by the scent of their darkness (or light) and can, to an extent, track them down based on their smell.
In Manhattan, Zexion’s powers have been greatly reduced: he can only cast illusions that affect either himself (i.e., manipulating his own appearance, or making it appear as though he isn’t there, etc.) or smaller objects. His illusions also don’t last nearly as long as they normally would and require more concentration, making them harder to hold and subsequently easier to break. With no lesser Nobodies around, Zexion obviously cannot summon any to his aid, and his portal ability is nonexistent. His Lexicon, while it can be summoned (although it’s harder to summon/dismiss), is quite useless for anything other than a distraction; the “pocket dimension” aspect is gone.
Weaknesses: Put simply, Zexion is not a fighter in any sense of the word. He is neither very fast nor very strong in the physical sense, and his small frame makes him somewhat easy to overpower. In addition, for all the complexity his illusions seem to have, they are painfully easy to break; all one needs to do is find a way to break his concentration and the illusion collapses. Throwing a monkey wrench into his plan also tends to do considerable damage; Zexion doesn’t always account for the variables, and a big enough variable can cause the plan to fall to pieces.
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider
History: Before becoming a Nobody, Zexion was the youngest of Ansem the Wise’s six apprentices, and was known as Ienzo. He tried to persuade Ansem to go further with his research, and aided in the rebellion against Ansem once he tried to put a stop to their research. Now led by Xehanort—who later be Xemnas—the group pushed their research too far and became heartless. Because of their strong will, their Nobodies retained their human forms and memories and formed the core six members of Organization XIII. Ienzo took the name Zexion and became number VI in the Organization, dubbed “the Cloaked Schemer”.
When the Organization was split into two groups to do research on memory, Zexion was sent to Castle Oblivion, where he took up residence in one of the basement floors. There he eventually discovered two other scents in the castle’s lowest basement, one of them belonging to a copy of Maleficent formed from somebody’s memory, and another he initially mistook for Xemnas. He later identified the scent as Riku’s. Upon learning that Marluxia intended to use Sora to take over Organization XIII, he, Vexen, and Lexaeus decided to counter his efforts using Riku. Zexion first sent Vexen, whom he and Lexaeus had been unsure about trusting, to investigate Marluxia under the guise of offering to help using the Riku Replica he created, then Lexaeus to sway Riku into joining them when Vexen was killed by Axel. Lexaeus failed as well, leaving Zexion to discuss the Organization’s fate with Axel, who told him of Marluxia’s imminent defeat. Zexion decided that with the possibility of Marluxia dying soon, Riku was no longer needed, and headed off to intercept him.
Zexion intercepted Riku while he was between floors, shortly after Marluxia’s death and informed him that Sora was in the castle. He gave Riku a world card Destiny Islands, where he played on Riku’s guilt, telling him that Sora would always oppose him as a host of darkness and putting the blame of Destiny Islands’ fall into darkness on him. He disguised himself as Sora and enveloped Riku in light, rendering him unable to do anything…until he broke free and wounded Zexion, causing his disguise to falter and fall apart. Surprised by Riku’s ability to control the darkness as well as enraged by his perseverance, Zexion decided to engage him in battle, despite being wounded. He was eventually defeated and retreated to Castle Oblivion’s basement, where he was joined by Axel and the Riku Replica. At first Zexion panicked, thinking Axel had brought along the real Riku, but then suggested using the replica to defeat the real Riku. Axel, on the other hand, suggested that the replica kill Zexion to gain the power Riku didn’t have and become a whole person. The replica grabbed Zexion by the collar of his cloak and drained the life out of him, causing him to fade into nothingness…
Shortly after, he rematerialized in Manhattan.
